A look at traditional Amate

Today we looked at a traditional Mexican folkart”amate”.

Amate is a type of paper produced from the fibers of the bark of fig trees.Typically amate paintings do not have any background colors, and are usually painted with thick black lines.

In order to reproduce our version ,we crushed  up and smoothed the brown paper bag several times. This method is used to achieve a softer appearance. Then we drew flowers, animals, and birds on the bag and  painted them with bright colors.
